What is Smartlook?
Smartlook is an analytics solution tool for websites, iOS/Android apps, and various app frameworks, that answers the "whys" behind users' actions. It helps users understand precisely how customers interact with website and app — watch recordings, create heatmaps, use automatic tracked events, and build conversion funnels. Data is seen on one central dashboard, which enables sharing and collaborating with colleagues. This is to support clear, data-driven decision-making for product managers, marketers, UX designers and developers, and help them improve each website and app by reducing churn rates, boosting conversions, identifying and fixing bugs, and improving UX.
Smartlook offers the ability to record users’ behavior in Unity games. The vendor states clients include Madfinger Games, MobilityWare, and Awesome Prototype.
Smartlook started in 2016 and currently boasts more than 2,800 paying organizations across the globe including companies like Paxful, Sky, Volvo, Vogue, Papa Johns, Miele, and Livestorm.

Great for startups!
- Smartlook has an awesome funnel visualization tool which is much easier to set up compared to Facebook and Google Analytics.
- Smartlook incorporates great filtering functionality to group your recordings for east processing.
- The free trial is loaded with functionality.
- Privacy issues with other countries are unclear (especially in Europe).
- Even though recordings are only kept for 30 days it would be useful if the old recording info is still available such as date and time.
- The assistant pop-ups are useful sometimes and annoying sometimes. It would like to be able to enable/disable them.
- Recording users' sessions.
- Filter recording based on user segmentation or events.
- Easy integration
- Sometimes the dashboard could be easier to understand.
- User heat maps are not so easy to use for unity apps.
SmartLook is good with just one con
- I can manage more websites from the same account
- Heatmaps are useful
- Also shows IP addresses and country data on the general interface.

A casual review of Smartlook
- Heatmap function
- User behavior tracking
- Pricing is customizable and reasonable
- Should have connected with google analytic
- Should be able to tell the reference difference (like youtube ads and search ads)
- The free trial should seriously have more monthly session

- A little difficult to install
- Poor Dashboard
- Missing mobile version
Smartlook creates invaluable insight for your new business
- It has been consistent with capturing data when a user visits the website. This is useful for cross-checking analytics data from other platforms. It shows the referral links and enough details about the session to be able to confirm the data is valid.
- It has filters that you can apply to recordings so that you can very quickly see which recordings belong to which marketing campaign or referral source.
- You can set up funnels to track conversions and then very easily click through to see those specific recordings.
- For the free or lower-level packages, the data is kept only for a limited time, i.e. 30 days, so there is the situation where you are implementing a marketing funnel that might take longer than 30 days and when you finally make a conversion you might want to see to complete history/path that your user took which lead them to finally make the conversion. In this situation, you will have missing recordings from their initial visits.
- Recordings are not made in all cases of traffic sessions. I would like to have more clarity/detail on why a specific session was not recorded. It would be great if Smartlook could confirm cases, where it could not record and explain that it was due to i.e. privacy setting/location/ session too short/ website, didn't load. This would help with troubleshooting possible issues on the website.
- They could have an option that while you are busy watching one recording, there is a quick button to go to the next recording so that you can more easily skip trough a few recordings.
Good experience and customer service
- Able to create new heat-maps on the free plan.
- Nice interface.
- Great filtering.
- When creating visitor records, I want to be able to create filters so I can selectively record/not record certain range of users.
Great product to test your ideas.
- Quick and easy setup.
- Many functions.
- Friendly user interface.
- Over-complicated pricing models.
Smartlook is a smart product.
- Easy to setup
- Easy to use
- Fast results
- None
Understand your customers better
- Show the path of your customers on your website. This leads to site improvements.
- You can see if they're browsing on desktop or mobile browsers.
- I like the funnels, because you can see if your customers require a lot of clicks before buying something or sending an email.
- The funnels are kind of difficult for me to navigate.
It's a really good solution for:
- Recording video of the user's visits to a project website.
- Creating a heat map and click map for selected page on website.
- Creating custom events that allows to filter videos and watch only very important visits.
- Building sales funnels and track conversion and drops on every step.
- Providing analytics and custom reports to analyze visits.
- A trial version is available.
- No integration with Google Tag Manager to automatically implement custom events.
- No examples for code integration.
- No ready integration with CRM systems, you should build your own integration.
- Tracking your user's behavior and record videos based on your custom events (add to cart, button clicks, add to wishlist, etc).
- Analyzing on what elements your users click most.
- For small projects, you have a free plan to record 1500 visits per month.
- Getting a detailed report of device, platform, UTM tags of the selected visit to have analytics what devices your clients are using.
Perfect tool to improve your site
- Data for heatmaps or funnels can also be retrieved retrospectively.
- Smartlook records all site visitors not just a sample.
- Videos can be accelerated or skipped in parts where the user is inactive
- Nothing
- Is not free :-)
Look the way they look
- Captures GUI from client end
- Less load on client network
- Stealthy
- I personally believe that having a free account is a good thing but it should come with less restrictions then it has right now.
- There should be some way to record the iframes as well if the iframes belong to the owner
See how users see you, as if you were watching Netflix !!!
- It does not slow down the client's navigation. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
- Watching a "live" recording is particularly useful to support a client who has problems at that moment.
- The reproduction of the videos is very fluid.
- The cost of the premium plan could be more accessible for companies like ours, which has a low budget for marketing and analytics issues.
- We have not reached the point of connecting with Google Analytics, but at the time we would like it to be as simple and flexible as possible.
Better find another solution
- Records most of the visits we are aware of and connects recordings based on users, not on sessions.
- Customer support is awful. The reps are not nice and requests are not treated well.
- Company's culture can be seen through interaction with anyone with Smartlook. It is toxic.
- Too pushy on a purchase. The freemium version was downgraded to a point that it cannot be used, just to force everyone to pay.
- Have I already mentioned customer support and culture? Horrible!
Crucial for conversions growth
- It really shows your visitors' behavior on your website, it shows where do they hesitate, why do they leave the website, etc.
- Smartlook videos can help you notice a lot of new things, like problems or potential improvements. Sometimes, otherwise, you don't notice a bug on your website, because you do not really use it as much as your visitors.
- You can sort your videos based on what you are interested in. For example, I always want to see what our registered visitors do, so I sort my videos and see only visitors who were on the "sign in" page.
- I would really appreciate if I could change the name of a user, e.g. a. returning visitor, so I would always know it's him, without merging with some kind of database using API
- Free Smartlook is really slow-- you can't skip silent passages
- The listed referrer sometimes doesn't correspond with reality
